Custom hardware and software for 3D vision systems: ModigenceVision in Hankyung Job & Joy’s IBK Changgong series

Kim holds a doctorate in imaging engineering, with research in image processing, computer vision, object detection, and 3D vision processing. He spent about seven years at a camera module maker, where he led stereo and ToF camera modules, process equipment, and production setup for a large Korean electronics group’s robot vacuum cleaners and medical devices.

Korea’s camera module industry, he explains, is built around high-volume phone and vehicle production and around manufacturing rather than development. A small company adding a camera to a new product is left with Chinese off-the-shelf modules, usually without technical support and with camera-related issues that cannot be reviewed in advance. That unsupported low-volume segment is the gap the company set out to fill.

At the time two ToF-based camera modules were in prototype, with release planned for March 2025. They ship first as development kits for customer testing, then are redesigned to the customer’s needs. Because a module alone is not usable, the company packages it with the peripherals a customer needs, such as an RGB camera, SoC board, interface board, and camera driver, and offers 3D vision system and algorithm development as a service.

Compared with existing ToF modules, Kim says, the company’s deliver higher resolving power and longer range with fewer resources, and cost less because unnecessary functions are left out. Target markets were robots and smart systems such as smart factories and farms, defense, and medical devices. Selected for the pre-TIPS program in December 2024 with seed investment from 99°C Investment Fund No. 1, the company planned to apply for deep-tech TIPS in 2025.
