‘ModigenceVision’, a startup that provides customized camera modules and solutions

Kim Daehee, CEO of ModigenceVision

– Develop and manufacture 2D or 3D camera modules to meet customer needs
– 3D Camera will be launched in the second half of 2024 under the brand name ‘MARU’ (tentative name)

ModigenceVision is a startup that provides customized camera modules and solutions. It was founded in June 2023 by CEO Kim Dae-hee (43).

CEO Kim earned a doctorate in video engineering by majoring in video processing and computer vision, and later worked for Samsung Electronics’ camera module manufacturer “Namuga” for about seven years.

CEO Kim introduced, “ModigenceVision is a combination of the Gyeongsang dialect ‘Modi’, which means ‘to gather’ and ‘divergence’, which means ‘to disperse’, and means ‘to collect and emit technology.’ Camera modules are used in many products, but additional technical support is required to apply them in practice. For example, there should be technical support for camera operation, such as ISP tuning and driver breaking-up. And depending on the characteristics of the product, various conditions such as the shape and size of the module, angle of view, and interface must be met.

“In order to apply camera modules to a new product, the customer must have prior camera-related technologies. For example, Samsung has a separate camera lab, so camera-related technologies are more complicated than expected. Modification Vision supports customers to apply cameras to new products through development and manufacturing of 2D or 3D camera modules to meet their needs, as well as all relevant technical support.”

Currently, two 5M RGB modules, one ToF Camera, the SerDes board, the UVC board, and the Viewer program will be developed, promoted, and sold. In addition, more specifications of camera and technology support services will be carried out. Modification Vision has 3D camera development and manufacturing technology based on ToF sensors, and it is expected to release 3D Camera under the brand name ‘MARU’ in the second half of 2024. This product can replace Intel’s ‘Real Sense’ which is the most representative of 3D cameras, and has superior performance over ‘Real Sense’ in terms of measurement distance and accuracy.

“Camera modules are used as parts of electronics, and rather than general promotion and marketing strategies, we need to meet companies in industries that need cameras. So, we are currently attracting customers based on developed prototype products. From now on, we will be able to meet more customers through exhibitions, websites, and articles.”

Currently, ModigenceVision has signed or is discussing development and mass production contracts with delivery robots, wearable devices, and logistics industry system companies as customers.

How did CEO Kim start his business? “The structure of Korea’s camera module industry is focused on mass production like mobile and automotive, and it is focused on manufacturing capabilities rather than self-development. As a result, small businesses to newly apply small-scale products or cameras have to use ready-made products from China rather than making and using the desired shape. In this case, technical support is often not provided, and it is difficult to review the issues caused by cameras when developing products in advance. I thought we could target a niche market with an industrial structure that is not supported by existing module companies because of the small amount. In particular, in the case of ToF camera, one of the strengths, we identified the problem that it is difficult for customers to apply to products when selling camera modules alone, and decided that we should establish and sell a ToF camera system to solve this problem. Based on this judgment, we are also discussing a collaboration contract with large companies.”
After the start-up, CEO Kim said, “I feel rewarded when I develop my concerns about ‘how to meet the needs of customers’ that I have been worried about while working at the company and prove that my thoughts are not wrong one by one through technical support.”

ModigenceVision consists of four members including CEO Kim, all of which are development personnel. All of them are members with more than 10 years of development experience related to cameras and have experience from development to mass production.

Regarding future plans, CEO Kim said, “We will continue to research and develop so that cameras can be easily applied to more fields,” and added, “We want to become a company that enters innovative industries such as AR, VR, and metaverse by researching and developing elemental technologies and systems in the field of computer vision based on camera modules and manufacturing as well as developed cameras.”
